Money-Saving Monday #10

Have you entered my birthday giveaway yet?  If not, please click HERE!  You only have a few more days!

It's back!  After a couple of weeks of rest, Money-Saving Monday is back this week!  Sorry for the hiatus, but sometimes the brain works creatively and thinks of cool things, and sometimes it doesn't!  My brain has been on vacation the past few weeks!

Last month, I bought some unmounted stamps and used Crafter's Companion EZ Mount foam to mount the stamps so that they would cling to acrylic blocks.  It worked great, but after I trimmed the excess rubber and  mounting foam off, my scissors were so gunked up, they were unusable   I considered tossing them at first, but they were relatively new and still super sharp, so instead, it was hubby to the rescue!

He went out to the garage and came back with some Goof Off.  Even though this stuff is billed as paint remover, hubby has used it for years as a "sticky" remover too.  I put a few drops of this stuff on a paper towel, wiped both sides of my scissor blades with it, and presto...scissors just as good as new!  This is also the same stuff I used to take the sticky off of the baby food jars I use to display my embellishments,  You can find Goof Off at most stores including Wal Mart, in the hardware or automotive section.

If you can't find Good Off, another good solution is using lighter fluid.  It may take more than a few swipes, but usually fixes the worst sticky messes too!

Happy Birthday Crafter's Companion!

Happy Thursday peeps!  I haven't been in my craft room to make a card in several weeks, so I figured it was time!  I started coloring cute little Popcorn the Bear at a crop last week, but he needed a card to live on, so this is what bloomed.  My stamp is from the Crafter's Companion Popcorn the Bear  Thanks a Bunch set.  I colored and blended him with my Bic Mark-It's (I'm saving up for Spectrum Noirs!) and used DCWV paper and card stock from my stash.  I'm entering this card in the Crafter's Companion Challenge Blog's October challenge - Fall Colors.

As I was writing and linking this post, I realized that Crafter's Companion and I share a birthday!!  This week is their FABULOUS BIRTHDAY SALE!  They're offering FREE shipping and handling plus double points on all purchases.  They have LOTS of specials going on, including buy one get one free items, free stamps sets with purchases, and new items in stock!  The mega sale is good through Sunday October 28th.  HURRY!!

WOYWW #177

Have you entered my birthday giveaway yet?  If not, please click HERE!

Happy (almost) Wednesday WOYWWers!!  Welcome to edition 177 of What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday!  It's that time of the week when we take a breather from life and go peek at what everybody else is doing on their desks all over the world!  Grab your passport and let's go!

Last week I failed miserably at posting or answering comments, so please forgive me.  I promise to try my best to make it up to you!!

What's on my desk this week is the aftermath of helping my daughter make cake toppers for the charity auction she helped put on for the agency she works at.  I just wrote a comprehensive post about it, and how I spent my birthday this week, HERE.  There's also some VERY IMPORTANT information about domestic violence in that post, so PLEASE go read it when you get the chance!

Anyway, we did our crafting last Tuesday, and I'm a little ashamed to say that this is still the same mess today!  Not only did I not straighten up anything, I also haven't crafted in a week.  That changes tonight!!!  (Or maybe tomorrow?) Don't forget to take a peek for the WOYWW badge/button if that's your thing.

Happy Scrapping! ~Amy E

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

First off, I owe each and every one of you an apology. I took an unexpected week (plus) off of blogging and my wonderful blog world with no notice or word.  For those of you who wrote and asked (thank you!) I'm still alive and kicking!  I had a few health issues, and I was procrastinating because is was my birthday and I was celebrating as much as possible!! Thank you for checking in, and thank you for coming back to read again.  And for those of you who are new here and on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Pinterest, WELCOME!!  I am humbled that so many of you chose to come hang out with me for a few minutes out of your day!  I PROMISE to either visit or respond to each email or comment I've received.  I'll be playing "catch-up" this week!

Now, on to the topic at hand.  Over the past few years, the month of October has become synonymous with  Breast Cancer Awareness, and the recognition and outpouring of support for such a horrid disease has brought some really great advances, both in treatment and in screening.  Awareness is something that's been needed for such a long time, and I'm so glad it's finally out there and being talked about openly.

But did you know that October is also National Domestic Violence Awareness Month?  Stop reading for just just a minute and count to NINE.  It's okay, I'll wait.   Did you do it?  Every NINE SECONDS a woman in this country is a victim of domestic violence.  In the time it took you to count to nine, an abuse took place.  Scary huh?

If you or someone you know has questions about domestic violence, or needs emergency assistance, you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline 24 hours a day at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

This time last year, I wrote about my beautiful daughter and how incredibly proud I am of her chosen career path.  You can read that post HERE.  She works at an agency called the Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services (ADWAS) and on top of her usual duties, this year she was on a committee of three people to plan and execute their annual charity dinner and fundraising auction!  She and her two co-workers did a SPECTACULAR job!  And since the dinner was the same week as mine and hubby's birthdays, she bought us tickets to go with her as our birthday presents!!!  I can't even begin to tell you how proud I was of her!  I thought I would show you a few pics of the gala, including the cake toppers she and I made for the "dessert dash."

These are the cake toppers we made last week for the desserts.  Each one has a descriptive name of the dessert, and who it was donated by.  I used Cricut cuts from the Wild Card and Elegant Edges cartridges.  We made 30 of them and realized we'll probably need more next year!

This was one of the desserts on the table when we got there!  Emily had bought us a birthday cake!!!!   We just had to keep out fingers crossed that nobody chose it before we had a chance!  Luckily, they didn't!

Here's a wider shot of the goodies.  After dinner is served, each table pools their money to go towards "buying" a dessert in the Dessert Dash.  The table that raises the most money gets first pick of their cake or dessert.  The second highest table gets second choice, etc.

Here's a better shot of our cake toppers!

This was how our table was laid out when we got there.  Emily and one of her co-workers were our table hosts, so they decorated our table.  We had purple (the DV awareness "color") tulips and beautiful bags of candy as favors.

A close up shot of our was a gorgeous work of art!

Here's Bryan (our daughter's cute boyfriend)  when we finally got our cake.  He was very happy that no one else chose it before we had a chance to get to it.  I will say though, that several tables started to chose it, until they read what was written on it!!

Here's the four of us right before we cut our birthday cake.  The pic with us AND the cake on the table in front of us came out blurry, so you just get to see just the family pic!!!

Emily and Bryan after the festivities!

Our bidder number, name tags, program, and favors at the end of the evening...(and that might just be an almost empty bottle of wine too! was my birthday!)  Notice the miniature disco ball on the bag of candy?!?  That would be my daughter's doing!  THAT'S my girl!

And here's a pic of the beautiful flowers (from hubby and daughter) that I woke up to the next morning on my actual birthday!

Although we had a spectacular time and the auction raised a bunch of money for the agency Emily works at, I want to make sure to end this post with the focus exactly where it should be.  If you have questions about domestic violence, even if it's regarding a friend or a loved one, there are resources available to you.  The National Domestic Violence Hotline can answer questions and point you in the right direction.  If you're the one being abused, they can get you HELP.  So I'll repeat....

If you or someone you know has questions about domestic violence, or needs emergency assistance, you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline 24 hours a day at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

Link Up For Pink

Have you entered my birthday giveaway yet?  If not, please click HERE!

Since it's October and Breast Cancer awareness Month, the massive Link Up for Pink Linky Party is back!  I'm coming in near the end of it, and there's already over 450 entries!  How cool is that?!?  Yolie and Celeste did such a fabulous job last year that I think it's pretty much becoming an institution!  If you have a chance, go take a peek at all the incredible entries!

For my card, I chose to use the completely adorable Save The Hooters Stamp from Fresh Brewed Designs. I just fell in love with the whole concept of this stamp.  I used the "coloring on Glitter Ritz glitter" technique that I showed in THIS tutorial.

I snapped a side view to show you some of the glitter and sparkle.  I did the technique just a little different this time.  I stamped the image on white card stock, covered it with the special Scor-Tape, and glitter, and then colored.  The glitter is translucent enough to see the stamp through it.  I did go back after coloring though and darken up some of the lines with a black Bic Mark-It marker.

Here's another shot that shows some of the sparkle.  I used scraps from the DCWV Glam Gal stack, card stock I had on hand, and Imaginesce heat activated brads.  I used a square punch to make the ends of my little banner.

I am also entering this card in the following challenges:
Cut It Up - Think Pink Challenge #3
Victorine Originals Challenge #44 - Lots of Layers
Crafts And Me Challenge #105 - Anything Goes

WOYWW # 175

Have you entered my birthday giveaway yet?  If not, please click HERE!
(open Internationally!)

Happy middle of the week!! Welcome to another edition of What's On You Workdesk Wednesday.  For those of you that have visited my desk the past few weeks and found it clean and organized...well NOT ANYMORE!!  My desk is officially a creative nightmare this week!  I took a pic of both sides of it so you can see how truly disorganized it is! This is what's on either side of me, when I'm sitting at my computer that's in the middle.

How can it possibly take this much stuff and cause this much mess to make only three cards?!?!  Well,  two and a half cards really, since the third one isn't even done yet!

For those who were asking last week what I was planning to do with the sheet of stamped leaves that was laying on my desk, you can see the finished card here.

For those of you who like to hunt for the WOYWW badge/button, here's a hint if you want's in the top photo.  Good luck!!'s my dirty little secret.  Now show us yours!

Happy Fall Card

Have you entered my birthday giveaway yet?  If not, please click HERE!

Well, I don't know about where you're living, but it's FINALLY starting to feel like Autumn in Seattle.  It's still unseasonably warm, but the days are getting shorter and the nights much cooler.  The frost will be here before you know it, and I'll have a yard full of leaves that will look exactly like the ones on this Fall card!  As usual, I'm entering the Crafter's Companion Challenge for this month.  The theme is Fall Colors.  I think I got it!!!

I used the Crafter's Companion Popcorn the Bear, Thanks a Bunch stamp set to fussy cut little Souffle the Duck and the sunflower and colored both with Distress Inks and a blender pen.

The leaves are from Stamps of Life and were fussy cut and then colored with different combinations of Mustard Seed, Tea Dye, Festive Berries, Spiced Marmalade, Wild Honey, and Peeled Paint Distress Inks.  The sentiment is from My Creative Time and it was stamped in Tea Dye, Vintage Photo, and Walnut Stain Distress Inks.  I used the Divine Swirls Cuttlebug embossing folder on the DCWV paper and background card stock to give my scene some motion and simulate a windy day.  I highlighted the embossing in Tea Dye Distress Ink.  I pop-dotted some of the leaves and the sentiment, and used a scrap of ribbon from my stash

This was the first time I had really played with so many colors of Distress Inks, and I really had fun!!  More of these kinds of cards to come!

As well as linking this to the Crafter's Companion Challenge Blog as listed above, I would also like to link this card to the following challenges:

A Muse Studio - Fall is in the Air
DL Art Thankful Thursday Linky Party - Anything Goes
More Than Favors Wacky Wednesday - Fall Theme

Money-Saving Monday #9

Have you entered my birthday giveaway yet?  If not, please click HERE!

Happy Monday peeps!!  First off, let me say WELCOME to our new subscribers, blog buddies and Facebook friends! It's so great that you took a few minutes out of your day to come hang with us!!

Welcome to edition #9 of Money-Saving Monday.  Our helpful and money-saving tip today comes from AJ at AJ Scrapbooking and Cards.

A few months ago I was at a Scrapbook Expo and saw a neat little tool that helped you to pick up tiny pieces of paper and place them exactly where you want them.  (Just think: Mickey Mouse Cricut Cartridge...the tiniest cuts EVER!)  It was a wooden stick that was placed in a tiny container of sticky stuff (resin maybe?) and then the sticky stuff would help you pick up tiny cuts.  If I remember right, it was around $6, and I really wanted one at the time but passed on it.

Thank goodness I did, because the two items above serve exactly the same purpose PERFECTLY!  All you need is a toothpick and a glue dot or two.  As long as the glue dot is flexible (not like a foam dot or dimentional) any brand should work.

Place the toothpick on one side of the glue dot and roll it to the other side, so that the glue is on the very end and all sides of the toothpick.

It should look something like the toothpick in the photo above when you're done.

Once you've finished applying the glue dot to the toothpick, you have a perfect picker-upper!  And when your tiny piece of paper gets to it's destination, it will release easily from the toothpick and live happily ever after, glued down to it's new spot!

If you have any money-saving tips or tricks you would like to share, please email me using my contact page.  Your tip and blog may be featured on a future edition of Money-Saving Monday!

Birthday Month Giveaway!

Happy October!  And happy birthday month to me!!!!!  Last year when I was a lot newer to the fabulous world of BLOG, I did an "Un-Birthday Giveaway" near my big day.  Now, I've learned from so many of you that birthdays shouldn't be restricted to just a single day, or passed over entirely...they should be celebrated the WHOLE month!!  And I figure that I'm getting old enough, I should really get all the celebrating in that I possibly can!  Life's to short to ignore it!

So grab a birthday hat and a margarita (or a soda!) and come celebrate with me!  I'm giving away the Pretty Pennants Cricut Cartridge to one of you lucky readers!!  Although my birthday is on the 21st, this giveaway will stay open for the entire month.  You have lots of different ways to earn entries!  Several of them, you can do daily.  Mr Rafflecopter, below, will tell you all about it!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Who else has a birthday this month???  Let's PARTY!!!!

Oh, and PS...this giveaway is open worldwide.  Although I understand why, I just hate restricting giveaways, so I've been trying to find easy and light-to-mail things to give away these days!

WOYWW #174

Happy Wednesday WOYWWers!!  Welcome to edition #174 of What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday! This is our weekly voyage to desks across the world to see what others just like us are working on.  I have to say, I feel really honored to be able to come into your homes and craft rooms each week, and learn a little about each of you.  I've never been able to travel far from my own country, so this is like a mini world tour each week.  So, thank you.  And thanks to our sweet host Julia, for thinking up such a lovely way for us to learn about other countries and cultures (and what great crafty items you can find in other parts of the world!!!!!)

Today, I'm showing just a section of my desk...the only part with anything interesting happening at the moment.  I'm really hoping to enter more challenges this month...and maybe even try out for a design team or two?  (Thanks to LOADS of nagging encouragement by my friend Susie!)  So I'm getting some Autumn colors together, and I'm about to get inky!!

The WOYWW badge/button is hidden in plain sight...pretty easy this week, so take a peek if that's your thing!

OH...and stay tuned.  October is my birthday month and I have a GIVEAWAY to announce tomorrow!!  Woohoo!

Happy middle of the week!!!!

Money-Saving Monday #8

Happy October!!  Wow, this year is really flying by fast.  It'll be Christmas before you know it!  Yeah, I know...bite my tongue.  So today's Money-Saving Monday tip is brought to us by Kristan from Babycakes. She and her mom were peeking around at Goodwill last week, and look what they found...

Over 3000 bottle caps!  She's been looking for some for a while but they aren't exactly cheap at Micheals.  She found all of these at Goodwill for a little over $10.

Please run over to Kristan's blog to see some of the cool things she's been doing with her new bottle caps!

So, your money-saving tip for today?  Second hand stores ROCK when it comes to finding and re-purposing craft supplies.  The photo below shows a shoe box full of different types and colors of seam binding and sewing notions I've picked up at my local Goodwill.  I can usually find a large variety package of them for a dollar or two.  I use them as ribbons and trims on cards and layouts.

Last week I picked up a "goody bag" that contained a huge stack of (several hundred) journaling tags and cards.  Most of them were old journaling cards from 7 Gypsies from 2005/2006.  They were something I don't have and could never buy now, and they will be PERFECT for Smash books!

I hope today's tip has inspired you to keep your eyes open for a great bargain next time you're passing your local thrift store.  Have you found anything great???  Let us know!

If you have any money-saving tips or tricks you would like to share, please email me using my contact page.  Your tip and blog may be featured on a future edition of Money-Saving Monday!

Happy Scrapping! ~Amy E
